Analysis of another students video
'Stuck' by the Canopy Climbers
'Stuck' by the Canopy Climbers
The first thing I noticed whilst watching this music video was the name of the song and the band in the corner. They had chosen to use a subtle font in white, which fitted the tone of the beginning of the video. One location used on multiple occasions was a field; this added a sense of mystery for the audience as they are left wondering why the characters are there. Taking into account the characters are all teenage boys, it does not fit the stereotypical location for this age; as they are usually portrayed as hanging around shops/estates.
One editing technique that stood out was the speeding up of the clouds near the beginning of the video. This gives the audience the impression that time is passing by, therefore adding emphasis to the lyrics, which refers to reflecting on yourself. The field is used again later on in the video; however it is dark and there is a bonfire. This symbolises what the main character is struggling with, he knows he has made a mistake, and the guilt is building up inside of him. This makes the audience sympathise with the main character, as it is obvious through the use of close up shots that he regrets his actions.
There is a short scene were the camera follows a boy chasing another boy, this particular scene looks very tense, so the use of the camera chasing them adds to the tension. The shaking of the camera also adds to the narrative of the 'bullying' as it represents the violence used against the boy. There are a few lip syncing shots which are performed very well, as it looks very professional and they decided to only lip sync over the chorus which built up suspense. There are two different narratives throughout the music video; one is about an abusive relationship, the other about the violence used against a boy. The decision to switch from one narrative to the other is effective as it allows the stories to develop, whilst adding suspense as to what will happen next.
The costumes used are quite basic, the teenage boys are dressed in casual clothes; however they fit well with the characters used and also the narratives. The overall mood of the video is very negative as the topic of the song revolves around violence. However they manage to create a music video which adds different levels of emotions towards the characters. Despite the fact that one boy was involved in the violence, it is clear that he regrets his involvement, this is evident as in one shot he is in a dark room, with very little lighting. This represents his unhappiness and guilt.
